Russia vs Georgia Olympic Volleyball
Russia and Georgia took each other on today in the Olympic Women’s Volleyball heats. The match took on increased significance as it echoed the conflict over South Ossetia. The two teams seemed to get on well before the match as the players all shook hands. Georgia beat the Russians 21-10 20-22 12-15.
After the match things took a slightly more aggravated turn as the Russian team questioned the validity of the Georgian team who were both born in Brazil. Russian player Natalia Uryadova said “We were not playing against the Georgian team today. If they are Georgian they would certainly have been influenced (by the event in Georgia), but certainly they are not.”
The Georgian player Christine Santanna responded “I feel Georgian. I’ve got a Georgian and a Brazilian passport and we did this for the Georgian people. I really didn’t want this situation between the players. I respect them.”
