  1. Never cared much for Kerouac’s work–if you don’t read him before you’re twenty, you’re doomed. After that, you start notice the over-writing, the stylistic shortcomings, etc. To me, William Burroughs was the genius of that crowd, though he was careful to avoid being labeled a “Beat” writer. He transcended such categorizations and with such books as CITIES OF THE RED NIGHT put the rest of his colleagues to shame…
